He received bachelor of arts degrees in philosophy andEnglish from Amherst College and wrote what would become his firstnovel, The Broom of the System, as his senior Englishthesis. He received a masters of fine arts from University ofArizona in 1987 and briefly pursued graduate work in philosophy atHarvard University. His second novel, Infinite Jest, waspublished in 1996. Wallace taught creative writing at EmersonCollege, Illinois State University, and Pomona College, andpublished the story collections Girl with Curious Hair, BriefInterviews with Hideous Men, and Oblivion and the essaycollections A Supposedly Fun Thing I'll Never Do Again andConsider the Lobster. He was awarded the MacArthurFellowship, a Lannan Literary Award, and a Whiting Writers' Award,and was appointed to the Usage Panel for The American HeritageDictionary of the English Language.
