Confronting freezing conditions and nearstarvation, the remaining crew struggled to make it back tocivilization. For Grinnell, the three-month expedition was both arite of passage and a spiritual odyssey. In the Barrens, he losthis sense of identity and what he had been conditioned to thinkabout society and himself.
