ErickSetiawanwasbornin1975inJakarta,Indonesia,toChineseparents.Aquiet,shychild,hewasthankfullyraisedinafamilyofgiftedstorytellers,whotaughthimthatwhilelifemighthaveanendlesssupplyofconflict,notallofittranslatesintoagoodstory.Duetotheanti-ChinesesentimentprevalentinIndonesia,hischildhoodwasoftenfraughtwithtension,whichpromptedhimtotakecomfortinbooksandintheworldofhisimagination.Totraumatizehimfurther,hisparentssenthimtoCatholicschools,wherehelearnedfromanearlyagetofeelguiltyabouteverythingandthatagrownmaninasashandaswishingrobewitharulerinhishandwasinnowaymaternal.

Atagesixteen,helefthisfamilyandmovedtotheUnitedStates.HeknewthreepeopleandbarelyspokeEnglish,yetwassomehowconvincedthathecouldcompetewiththetopstudentstogetintothebestcolleges.Hisresolution/delusionpushedhimtoworkhard.Thefollowingyear,hisfirstchoice,Harvard,rejectedhim,butfortunatelyStanfordhadalowerstandard.Tothisday,hebelievesthattheyadmittedhimbymistake.
