《情感教育》的主人公弗雷德里克·莫罗出身于外省一个资产阶级家庭，十八岁那年来到巴黎攻读法律。可是他只对文学艺术感兴趣，试写过小说和华尔兹舞曲，还跟人学习绘画，但都半途而废。他深深爱上了画商阿尔努的妻子玛丽。玛丽虽不爱丈夫，但恪守妇道。后来，她终于被莫罗的一片痴情所打动，答应与他约会。时值一八四八年二月，巴黎爆发了革命。莫罗为了这个约会，没有去参加民众的游行。但玛丽因儿子突患假膜性喉炎，未能赴约。绝望之余，莫罗投入交际花萝莎奈特的怀抱。两人同居并生下一个儿子，不久儿子不幸夭折。莫罗与出身贵族的实业家当布勒兹交往，为了进入上流社会，他成为当布勒兹夫人的情夫。实业家去世后，两人准备结婚。但在破了产的阿尔努夫妇的家具拍卖会上，当布勒兹夫人的举动深深刺伤了莫罗的心，于是他与这位贵妇人一刀两断。他万分沮丧地回到家乡，心里尚存一线希望：与一直爱恋他的乡下姑娘路易丝共结连理。可是在教堂的广场上，他恰遇路易丝与他的老同学戴洛里耶举行婚礼。莫罗羞愧难当，返回了巴黎。一八六七年的一天傍晚，阿尔努夫人突然来访，两人万分激动，互诉衷肠。她剪下一缕白发留给莫罗作纪念，与他诀别。

Geoffrey Wall teaches at the University of York, translated Flaubert's Selected Letters and Madame Bovary for Penguin Classics, and is the author of Flaubert: A Life.
Robert Baldick translated many volumes from the French for Penguin Classics.
