Dr.BirdimarriedandmovedtoCopenhagenin1959，wherehejoinedLeverBros.，in1959asChief-Chemist，DevelopmentLaboratory.Duringthisperiodhebecameinterestedinsurfacechem-istryandjoined，asassistantprofessor，theInstituteofPhysicalChemistry（founderofinstitute:ProfessorJ.BrOnsted），DanishTechnicalUniversity，Lyngby，Denmark，in1966.Heirutiallydidresearchonsurfacescienceaspects（e.g.detergents;rrucelleformation;adsorption;biophysics）.DuringtheearlyexplorationanddiscoverystagesofoilandgasintheNorthSea，hegotinvolvedinResearchScienceFoundationrograms，withotherResearchInstitutesaroundCopenhagen，intheoilrecoveryphenomenaandsurfacescience.Later，researchgrantsonthesamesubjectwereawardedfromtheEuropeanCommonMarketprojects.Theseprojectsalsoinvolvedextensivevisitstootheruniversitiesandanexchangeofguestsfromallovertheworld.Dr.BirdiwasappointedResearchProfessorin1985（NordicScienceFoundation），andwasthenappointed，in1990，totheSchoolofPharmacy，Copenhagen，asprofessorinPhysicalChemistry.
Therewascontinuousinvolvementwithvariousindustrialcontractresearchprogramsthrough-outtheseyears.Theseprojectshaveactuallybeenaveryimportantsourceofinformationinkeepingupwithrealproblems，andhelpedintheguidanceofresearchlaruungatalllevels.ProfessorBirdiisaconsultanttovariousnationalandintemationalindustries.Heisamemberofvariouschemicalsocieties，andamemberorganizingcommittees，ofnationalandinternationalmeetingsrelatedtosurfacescience.Heisamemberofselectioncommitteesforassistantprofessorandprofessor，andwasanadvisorymember（1985-1987）oftheACSjournal:Langmuir.
