Life was hard when Jack was growing upand he started working when he was 10. Hedid a variety of jobs, some legal, others not,and even spent some time living as a tramp. Inhis free time he went to the library and spentmany hours there reading. In 1894 he wentback to school, and published his first short story Typhoon\" off theCoast of Japan. Then in 1896 he went to the University of California,Berkeley, but had to leave because of money problems.In July, 1897 he left for the Klondike Gold Rush3 in Alaska. Like manyothers, he became very ill and came home and worked as a full-timewriter. He wrote short stories and soon became successful. In 1903 hewrote the story which made his name4: The Call of the Wild. His nextnovel was The Sea-Wolf （1904）. With his earnings5 he bought a largefarm in California, where he died in 1916.London was a prolifie writer. Between 1905 and 1916 he published18 novels and six collections of short stories, as well as a play andvarious works of non-fiction, including a biography. Other works werepublished after his death. His most famous novels were White Fang（1906）, The Iron Heel （1908） and Martin Eden （1909）. However, he wascriticised for his writing technique in later life: he took pieces writtenby other people in news reports, etc. and changed them to his ownstyle. Some people felt it was plagiarism.
　　
　　Katherine Mansfield Bea umontwas bornonOctober14th 1888 in Wellington, New Zealand. She wasthe daughter of a middle-class colonial family. Shebegan writing when she was at school and herstories were published in two school magazines.In 1903, she moved to London to attend Queen\'sCollege, then in 1906 she returned to New Zealand.However, she found life very dull after her time in London, and shepersuaded her father to let her return there with an allowance of ~100a year.She led a bohemian lifestyle until she moved to Germany in 1909.In Germany she started writing in earnest and in 1911, her first collectionof stories In a German Pension was published. She started writing forRhythm magazine, and fell in love with its editor, John MiddletonMurry. The couple eventually got married in 1918.Katherine\'s life and work was changed by her brother\'s death in October1915 in World War I. Many of her stories after his death focused onchildren and her childhood memories. Katherine was friendly withboth D H Lawrence and Virginia Woolf. Woolf said that Mansfield\'swas \"the only writing I have ever been jealous of\".
　　
　　James Fenimore Cooper was born inBurlington, New Jersey, USA on September15th, 1789. He was the eleventh of twelvechildren. His parents, William and ElizabethFenimore Cooper, were Quakers. Hisfather was a successful landowner2 and heestablished the village of Cooperstown inNew York State. When Cooper was growing up, he loved exploringthe countryside and forests that surrounded his family\'s estate.Cooper joined the Navy when he was 17 and travelled the seas for thenext five years. He inherited4 his father\'s estate when he was 20, and gotmarried when he was 22. For a while he made a living from farming. Helived comfortably and had time for activities such as reading. He learnedabout American history and about the lives of the Native Americans.Once, after finishing a story he told his wife that he could easily writesomething better himself. She told him to try. He did, and publishedhis first novel in 1820. He went on to write over 40 books, includingworks of social and political criticism. He is most famous for his five\'Leatherstocking Tales\' set in the American frontier which include TheLast of the Mohicans （1826）. The hero of these novels is Natty Bumppo,who is also known as Hawkeye and as Leatherstocking.From 1826 to 1833 Cooper travelled in Europe and lived in London,Paris and Sorrento. Through his writing he aimed to teach his readersabout social responsibilities, about democracy and about Americanhistory and heritages.Cooper died in 1851 at his home in Cooperstown. 《野性的呼唤》
