167 illustrations in color and black and white George Lowe, a New Zealand-born explorer, mountaineer, photographer, and filmmaker was part of the 1953 British Everest Expedition. He was the founder and first chairman of the Himalayan Trust, and directed the Oscar-nominated documentary "The Conquest of Everest."

Huw Lewis-Jones has a PhD from the University of Cambridge. He was formerly curator at the Scott Polar Research Institute, Cambridge, and the National Maritime Museum, London.
