    Anavidtraveler,hisfundamentallyromanticnaturerevelingintheexotic,FlaubertwenttoTunisiatoresearchhissecondnovel,Salammbo(1862).BothSalammboandTheSentimentalEducation(1869)werepoorlyreceived,andFlaubert'sgeniuswasnotpubliclyrecognizeduntilhismasterfulThreeTales(1877).Amonghisliterarypeers,hisreputationwasextraordinary,andheformedlastingfriendshipswithTurgenev,GeorgeSand,andtheGoncourtbrothers.

    Despitehisreputationasamasterofrealists,hewasnotfundamentallyarealisticnovelist.Flaubert'saimwastoachievearigidlyobjectiveformofart,presentedinthemostperfectform.Hisobsessionwithhiscraftislegendary:hecouldworksevenhoursaday,manydaysonend,onasinglepage,tryingtoattunehisstyletohisidealofbalancedharmony,seekingalwayslemotjuste.
