　　In Russian history, the twentieth century was an era ofunprecedented, radical transformations - changes in social systems,political regimes, and economic structures. A number of distinctiveliterary schools emerged, each with their own voice, specificartistic character, and ideological background. As a single-volumecompendium, the Companion provides a new perspective on Russianliterary and cultural development, as it unifies both émigréliterature and literature written in Russia. This volumeconcentrates on broad, complex, and diverse sources - fromsymbolism and revolutionary avant-garde writings to Stalinist,post-Stalinist, and post-Soviet prose, poetry, drama, and émigréliterature, with forays into film, theatre, and literary policies,institutions and theories. The contributors present recentscholarship on historical and cultural contexts oftwentieth-century literary development, and situate the mostinfluential individual authors within these contexts, includingBoris Pasternak, Alexander Solzhenitsyn, Joseph Brodsky, OsipMandelstam, Mikhail Bulgakov and Anna Akhmatova.
