Gabe Cyr, a recognised leader in the altered-book community, is a strong advocate of the creative possibilities of this craft. Here, Gabe not only explains the basic techniques to newcomers, she also broadens the topic and finds exciting new ways to transform a simple book into a unique art object using a wide range of media. The 15 inventive ideas include books that are turned into functional objects, such as clocks or picture frames. Other projects reinvent traditional book forms and shapes, such as the accordion and circle design. Inspiring examples of collaborative altered books and round robins are also included. Gabe Cyr served as co-editor of Altered Words, the official journal published by the International Society of Altered Book Artists (ISABA) from 2003 to 2004. For the past 10 years she has been busy exhibiting her work, some of which has been featured in publications such as The Art of Fabric Books (C&T, 2005), Altered Books 102 (Design Originals, 2003), and Crafts for the Spirit (Lark, 2003). She is currently serving as the Standards Committee Chair for the Southern Highland Craft Guild, the oldest craft guild in the United States.
