本书稿是为适应大学书院制通识教育改革，深入发挥大学英语拓宽人文视野，传递人文精神，培养人文素养的职能而编写的面向非英语专业大学英语分级高级班和模块拓展班学生的通用英语教材。教材选取英语人文经典名篇，主题涉及中外文化、法律、教育、女性、方法论、演说、文学等人文社科领域，选取的作者既有通贯各个学科的思想家、哲学家，也有各个领域内的专家，选文既是各个领域必读的著作，也是大学生应该了解知悉的通识内容，它们在语言上或以论辩见长，或以晓畅闻名，或以感染力著称，或以优美华丽为世人所称颂，各具特色。教材旨在通过对经典原著的直接阅读，使学生熟悉英语各种文体的篇章安排和行文特点，掌握各专业英语的句法构造和词汇特色，了解各领域的相关论题论点，培养学生阅读经典原著的能力，激发学生深度阅读、深度思考的兴趣。
教材按主题进行编排，每个主题为一个单元，每册共设八个单元，每单元设一篇主讲课文，两篇补充阅读，在编排上突出课文的思想性，淡化基本语言知识和词汇练习，主讲课文编有开放性讨论题和英译汉翻译练习、写作练习，强调实践性。选文在语言难度上相较于传统大学英语教材有大幅提高，对于大学英语分级高级班的英语学习有引领和提升的作用；在内容上承载了人类宝贵的精神遗产，传递着深刻的人文关怀，有利于开阔大学生的视野格局，培养大学生的人文素养。 目录
