　　Inthetwo-yearsequenceoftheFeynmanLecturesonPhysicswhichweregivenfromSeptember1961throughMay1963fortheintroductoryphysicscourseatCaltech，theconceptsofquantumphysicswerebroughtinwhenevertheywerenecessaryforanunderstandingofthephenomenabeingdescribed.Inaddition，thelasttwelvelecturesofthesecondyearweregivenovertoamorecoherentintroductiontosomeoftheconceptsofquantummechanics.Itbecameclearasthelecturesdrewtoaclose，however，thatnotenoughtimehadbeenleftforthequantummechanics.Asthematerialwasprepared，itwascontinuallydiscoveredthatotherimportantandinterestingtopicscouldbetreatedwiththeelementarytoolsthathadbeendeveloped.TherewasalsoafearthatthetoobrieftreatmentoftheSchrodingerwavefunctionwhichhadbeenincludedinthetwelfthlecturewouldnotprovideasufficientbridgetothemoreconventionaltreatmentsofmanybooksthestudentsmighthopetoread.Itwasthereforedecidedtoextendtheserieswithsevenadditionallectures;theyweregiventothesophomoreclassinMayof1964.Theselecturesroundedoutandextendedsomewhatthematerialdevelopedintheearlierlectures. 　　Feynmanetal,TheesarethelecturesinphysicsthatIgavelastyearandtheyearbeforetothefreshmanandsophomoreclassesatCaltech.Thelecturesare,ofcourse,notverbatim-theyhavebeenedited,sometimesextensivelyandsometimeslessso.Thelecturesformonlypartofthecompletecourese.Thewholegroupof180studentsgatheredinabiglectureroomtwiceaweektoheartheselectresandthentheybrokeupintosmallgroupsof15to20studentsinrecitationsectionsundertheguidanceofateachingassistant.Inaddition,therewasalaboratorysessiononceaweek.
