      Inthetwo-yearsequenceoftheFeynmanLecturesonPhysicswhichweregivenfromSeptember1961throughMay1963fortheintroductoryphysicscourseatCaltech,theconceptsofquantumphysicswerebroughtinwhenevertheywerenecessaryforanunderstandingofthephenomenabeingdescribed.Inaddition,thelasttwelvelecturesofthesecondyearweregivenovertoamorecoherentintroductiontosomeoftheconceptsofquantummechanics.Itbecameclearasthelecturesdrewtoaclose,however,thatnotenoughtimehadbeenleftforthequantummechanics.Asthematerialwasprepared,itwascontinuallydiscoveredthatotherimportantandinterestingtopicscouldbetreatedwiththeelementarytoolsthathadbeendeveloped.TherewasalsoafearthatthetoobrieftreatmentoftheSchrodingerwavefunctionwhichhadbeenincludedinthetwelfthlecturewouldnotprovideasufficientbridgetothemoreconventionaltreatmentsofmanybooksthestudentsmighthopetoread.Itwasthereforedecidedtoextendtheserieswithsevenadditionallectures;theyweregiventothesophomoreclassinMayof1964.Theselecturesroundedoutandextendedsomewhatthematerialdevelopedintheearlierlectures.   Feynmanetal,TheesarethelecturesinphysicsthatIgavelastyearandtheyearbeforetothefreshmanandsophomoreclassesatCaltech.Thelecturesare,ofcourse,notverbatim-theyhavebeenedited,sometimesextensivelyandsometimeslessso.Thelecturesformonlypartofthecompletecourese.Thewholegroupof180studentsgatheredinabiglectureroomtwiceaweektoheartheselectresandthentheybrokeupintosmallgroupsof15to20studentsinrecitationsectionsundertheguidanceofateachingassistant.Inaddition,therewasalaboratorysessiononceaweek.
