WilliamBlakewasbornon28November1757inLondon.Insteadofbeingsenttoschoolhewasgivendrawingclassesfromayoungage.WhenhewasfourteenhewasapprenticedtotheengraverJamesBasireandhelaterwentontoworkasanengraver,illustrator,printeranddrawingteacher.In1779hebecameastudentattheRoyalAcademy.In1782hemarriedCatherineBoucherwhowastobecomeagreatsupporttohimthroughouthislife.Hisfirstcollectionofpoems,PoeticalSketcheswaspublishedin1793.In1789hepublishedSongsofInnocencewhichwasfollowedbySongsofExperiencein1793.Intheearly1800shewrotehisepicpropheticpoemsMiltonandJerusalem.Hedevelopedhisownpracticeofillustratinghispoeticalworkswithhisownetchings,producingbeautifullyilluminatededitions.Blake'spoliticalbeliefswerecontroversialforthetimes;hesupportedtheFrenchRevolution,condemnedslaveryandthesubjugationofwomen.Hisreligiousbeliefswerealsoidiosyncraticandhereportedseeingvisionsofangelsatvariouspointsinhislife.Blakedied,poorandinobscurityon12August1827.
