　　五四运动时期开始新文学创作。1924年旅居英国，任伦敦大学东方学院汉语讲师。1926年加入文学研究会，1930年回国，先后在齐鲁大学、山东大学任教。1937年《骆驼祥子》问世。抗日战争爆发后，任中华全国文艺界抗敌协会理事兼总务部主任，从事抗战文学运动。1946年赴美讲学，1949年底回国。历任政务院文教委员会委员、中国文联副主席、中国作协副主席及书记处书记、中国人民代表大会代表、全国政协常委等职。1951年北京市人民政府授予他“人民艺术家”称号。文化大革命初期遭受迫害，1966年8月24日在北京投太平湖自杀。辑有《老舍文集》。
