The GEI is an important platform for clean energy production, widespread energy allocation and electrification of energy consumption. It will provide systematic solutions for the sustainable development of economy, society and environment. Based on the construction of continental energy interconnection, the GEI backbone grid is a strategic channel for realizing the mutual supportive interconnection of power grids across continents, which connects major clean energy bases and load centers to achieve multiple energy global allocation, cross-time-zone and cross-seasonal complementarity. It is a critical energy infrastructure system spanning five continents, connecting the four oceans, traversing the East and the West, the North and the South, and covering the entire world. The GEI backbone grid will significantly promote the large-scale development, wide allocation, complementarity and efficient utilization of clean energy. The global population and economy are growing, and energy consumption is increasing. As the current energy structure based on fossil energy brings arduous challenges to the sustainable development of mankind, there is an urgent need for Iow-carbon and clean transition of energy. In the last decade, the world's population, economy and energy consumption have continued to grow. From 2000 to 2017, the global population has increased from 6.14 to 7.5 billion, and global GDP has increased from 33.6 to 80 trillion USD. The total primary energy consumption has increased from 14.8 to 20.6 billion tonnes of standard coal equivalent (tce). The continuous growth of population and economy has propelled the continuous increase of energy consumption. High consumption of fossil energy has brought about major challenges such as resource shortage, environmental pollution and climate change.
