HermanMelvillewasborninAugust1,1819,inNewYorkCity,thesonofamerchant.Onlytwelvewhenhisfatherdiedbankrupt,youngHermantriedworkasabankclerk,asacabin-boyonatriptoLiverpool,andasanelementaryschoolteacher,beforeshippinginJanuary1841onthewhalerAcushnet,boundforthePacific.DesertingshipthefollowingyearintheMarquesas,hemadehiswaytoTahitiandHonolulu,returningasordinaryseamanonthefrigateUnitedStatestoBoston,wherehewasdischargedinOctober1844.Booksbasedontheseadventureswonhimimmediatesuccess.By1850hewasmarried,hadacquiredafarmnearPittsfield,Massachussetts(wherehewastheimpetuousfriendandneighborofNathanielHawthorne),andwashardatworkonhismasterpieceMoby-Dick.Literarysuccesssoonfaded;hiscomplexityincreasinglyalienatedreaders.AfteravisittotheHolyLandinJanuary1857,heturnedfromwritingprosefictiontopoetry.In1863,duringtheCivilWar,hemovedbacktoNewYorkCity,wherefrom1866-1885hewasadeputyinspectorintheCustomHouse,andwhere,in1891,hedied.Adraftofafinalprosework,BillyBudd,Sailor,wasleftunfinishedanduncollated,packedtidilyawaybyhiswidow,whereitremaineduntilitsrediscoveryandpublicationin1924.
