  •   ThepresentgreatlyenlargedversionwasmainlywrittenduringasabbaticalattheuniversityofUppsaladuring2000.Theaimofthebookistopresentalargelyphenomenologicalintroductiontothefieldofsolidstatemagnetismatarelativelyelementarylevel.Thetwobasicconceptsofmagnetisminsolidsnamelythelocalizedandthedelocalizeddescriptionarepresentedastheextremeapproaches.Thetruenatureofmagnetismlies,asofteninlife,somewhereinbetween,sometimesshowingatendencytowardsthemorelocalizedside,sometimestendingtothedelocalizedside.Itisperhapsthismixingofconceptswhichmakesmagnetismappearcomplicatedanddifficult.Anothersourceofconfusionisthedifferentlanguageusedbytheoreticiansandexperimentalists.Ihavetriedveryhardtoclarifytheserathermoresemanticproblemsandtouseauniformnomenclaturethroughoutthebook.Itismybeliefandmyexperiencethattheapproachpresentedhereprovidesausefulintroductionnotonlyforthephysicist,butalsofortheinterestedreadercomingfromfieldslikechenustry,electricalengineeringorevengeo-sciences.Themathematicalconceptsusedarekeptrathersimpleandhardlyevergobeyondanundergraduatecourseinmathematicsforphysicists,chemistsorengineering.SincethebookemergedfromalecturecourseIhavegivenatViennaUniversityofTechnologyforthelast15years,thechaptersinthebookarenotcompletelyself-contained.Thefirst-timereaderisthusadvisedtoreadthechaptersinthesequencethattheyappearinthebook.ItismysincerehopethatafterhavingreadthisbookthereaderwillagreethatforoncetheEncyclopediaBrittanicaisinerrorwhenitstatesFewsubjectsin,sciencearem,oredifficulttoun,derstan,thanmagn.etism,(EncyclopediaBrittanica,15thedition1989).
