A mathematics lecturer at Oxford, Dodgson enjoyed mathematical puzzles and jokes, several of which are included in his best-known works, Alice's Adventures in Wonderland (1865) and Through the Looking Glass (1872). John Tenniel (1820–1914) provided the original illustrations for Alice in Wonderland and Through the Looking-Glass.
